First road trip with our little one

A vacation is what you take when you can no longer take what you’ve been taking. ~ Earl Wilson

This quote perfectly describes my idea of a vacation. Sometimes you just need a break from everything and spend time with yourself and your loved ones. After Angel’s birth, I was eagerly waiting for a trip and we finally went with our two close friends. Four adults with a cute little munchkin proved to be a fantastic plan.

The month of June is extremely hot and humid in New Delhi. We wanted to visit a colder place so decided to go to Dharamshala. We booked a resort away from the hustle and bustle of the city from Make My Trip at a decent cost. I am not a 5-star / 7-star property freak. For me, the place should be hygienic with basic amenities, good food, nice ambience and of course children friendly. Initially, I was worried about Angel’s meals as I prefer home cooked food rather than packaged ones. But managed pretty well {I am not against packaged foods, they are a great help while traveling. Its totally a personal choice.}

From New Delhi to Dharamshala it takes approximately 9 hrs 30 mins by car. Though it’s a long drive specially with a baby but it wasn’t difficult at all. We took directions from Google Maps throughout our journey and this kept me wondering, in our childhood when there were no cell phones how our parents managed to travel with us.

We started early morning on June 28th and had breakfast at Amrik Sukhdev, trust me it is not worth the hype. There are much better options around. Our next stop was Domino’s Pizza in Kangra. Nothing can match my fondness for a cheese burst pizza. I am a die hard Pizzaterian 😛 I breastfeeded Angel all day on demand so it wasn’t a problem. She slept for most of the time. I took a car seat along and it was such a big relief. {In India, car seat is not compulsory and most of the parents don’t even buy.} We reached the resort in the evening. The room was good. The mountain view from the balcony was beautiful. It was better than I expected.  The best part was the food. We had breakfast and dinner buffet included in our stay. We weren’t disappointed even once, it had that good taste. The staff was very helpful and courteous. They let me sterilise Angel’s feeding bottles in their kitchen microwave. {I have Philips Avent microwave steam sterilizer.} The weather was lovely. It kept raining on and off. We made sure that the trip doesn’t turn out to be hectic so went out in the afternoons and came back in the evenings. We checked in on June 28th and checked out on July1. We visited a few places, here is a quick review.

  • Dalai Lama Temple Complex :

Location : Temple Road, McLeod Ganj

Also referred to as Tsuglhakhang Complex. It is a major tourist attraction and the home of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso who describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. We couldn’t see him as he often travels around the globe. The place is clean, peaceful and relaxing. For the first time, I touched the prayer wheels and felt a positive wave around it.

  • Jimmy’s Italian Kitchen :

Location : Jogiwara Road, McLeod Ganj

This place has a simple decor with Hollywood movie posters on the walls. They have a unique system, they give you a paper and a pen to write down whatever you wish to order. If you are a Delhiite you will find similarity between it’s menu and The Big Chill Café’s menu. But at a lesser cost and better taste. I quite liked it. A must visit!

  • Tibet Kitchen :

Location : Jogiwara Road, McLeod Ganj

This place is known for its authentic traditional cuisines. It is usually crowded but even if you have to wait it is worth it. I just loved the food we ordered from momos to sizzlers, each and everything. Complete value for money. I will highly recommend this place to anyone who visits McLeod Ganj.

  • Snow Lion Restaurant :

Location : Jogiwara Road, McLeod Ganj

Cozy place with a nice collection of books. We stopped by for coffee in the evening. Service a bit slow but overall a good experience.

We missed going to Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium but thats on our list for the next time. On our way back to Delhi we stopped to take blessings at JwalaJi  Temple and Chintpurni Temple. It was a wonderful trip that ended even better. My 8 month old baby adjusted quite well and we had a lovely time.

Things to keep in mind while travelling with a baby to a cold destination:

  1. Clothes (Inners, Warmers, Sweater, Jacket, Jeans, T-shirts, Sleepsuits etc)
  2. Medicines (For fever, cold, cough, vomiting as prescribed by your paediatrician)
  3. Diapers, Wipes, Rashfree cream, Hand Sanitizer, Changing sheet
  4. Feeding Bottles, Feeding bowl, Steriliser, Cleaning Brush
  5. Baby Carrier, Car Seat

Recently I came across an article that says Spend money on vacations than gifts as it helps in overall development (Link). So try to plan a trip with your child / children soon.

God Bless All 😇
